Quote of the day
Thursday, September 28th, 2006As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air however slight lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.

General Update
Tuesday, September 26th, 2006I have been fairly busy lately. Been unpacking stuff for the apartment. Most of the furniture is now moved in:
- Desk (used to hold computer equipment [computer/printer/phone/router])
- Nightstands
- Bed
- Easy Chair
No fridge yet. Moving that this weekend. Going to rent a truck/ramp. I am fully moved in. Patti is mostly moved in. She is going through her clothes and donating ones that don’t fit or she doesn’t want. We went through a bunch of things at the old apartment and threw away quite a bit. There is more to get rid of and Patti will be doing that throughout the week. She is going up to the old apartment today to gather up the rest of her clothes and bring them down to the new apartment. We will go through and unpack stuff tonight/tomorrow.
Phone service and DSL have been ordered. AT&T is much much cheaper then verizon. $10.00 and change a month for a basic line (essentially dial tone and calls within 12 miles). $33.00 hookup charge. In comparison Verizon wanted $100.00 to hook up the line and about $27.00 a month for a basic line.
DSL from AT&T is going to be 6 mbps. I am about a block from the CO (phone company switching station) so should get super fast bandwith. $27.99 a month for that. Verizon was only 3 mbps and wanted almost $50.00 a month JUST FOR DSL!!!
So as long as the service is of the same quality (I keep hearing the “you get what you pay for” line in my head) it should be a good deal. However I have heard far to many negative stories about SBC/AT&T (or whatever they are calling themselves this week). Also I think there marketing deal for the new Yellow Pages was a bit over the top.
So about 80% moved in at this point. I will be blogging more later today about some technology related topics.
Moved In
Friday, September 22nd, 2006Well me and Patti moved into our new apartment last night. We are mostly unpacked (the kitchen is all setup and the bedroom/bathroom is done). I walked home from work last night and walked to work this morning. I will be getting a lot more exercise now
We will be going to the old apartment tomorrow morning and picking up our kitchen table and chairs. Also Patti’s night stand and a few other odds and ends (hamper/more clothes). We have taken before pictures and will be posting those soon. As well as after pictures.
In other news I went to the disney archives yesterday and saw up close the Chronicles of Narnia Wardrobe. That was pretty cool. I also saw several of Walt’s personal effects and notes he made on various manuscripts and such. It was pretty nifty.
Legacy support
Thursday, September 14th, 2006Grrrr!!!!!!!! I am so frustrated. Trying to build samba/kerberos/openldap on a solaris 8 box. Its maddening! I keep getting hung up when building ldap. I built bdb and kerberos just fine. For some strange reason openldap insists on finding/user bdb (berkely db) even if i say don’t use the bdb backend or if i disable all backends. I don’t need this as a server. Just as a client. Solaris meet active directory. You will play nice now. This site says so.
Update
Wednesday, September 13th, 2006I haven’t blogged in a while. Been very busy with work. As I have mentioned in a previous post I am working for Disney in the Disney Internet Group -> Parks And Resorts Online team. I am a system engineer responsible for a number of tasks including automation of routine tasks (such as content pushes)and enabling us to meet PCI compliance. (If you don’t know what that is be glad you don’t).
We are moving this weekend. It will be very nice to not have a 2 hour commute each day. We will make sure to take before and after pictures of the appartment (something I wanted to do the first time I moved but didn’t). We are moving to a much nicer /larger appartment (2 bedrooms vs 1). This means I will gain a workspace and be able to keep clutter out of the living room/bedroom.
Anyway back to work now. In process of preparing to migrate our systems to Active Directory starting tomorrow. Fun stuff.
