Media Center

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

I have gotten my media center setup. I decided against using linuxmce so that I would be able to individually upgrade components and not worry about breaking things :) I have installed mythtv and gotten my hardware setup. It was all quite easy. I used this howto to do the setup. Worked like a champ!

I have the livetv(recording)/pictures/music parts figured out. Now I need to figure out how to setup the gaming part and the info center.

ROFL

Wouldn’t that only be a problem if intelligent comments on slashdot were not countable? I’ve been counting since sometime in 2004, and I’ve still got plenty of unused fingers.

Ubuntu Performance Tuning

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Interesting article I saw on digg about tuning Ubuntu performance. Some was new and some I knew about already.

Now its our turn

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

I saw this on /. today:

OSX on the x86 platform runs on a sub-set of the hardware which evolved with the commodity PC running Windows. The Linux Geek – if he is honest – also knows that it was the mass-market PC running Windows which transformed the home user from the Geek with the 14K modem to the family with fiber to the premises—and did it all in little more than ten years.

It got me thinking. Now that we have all of this bandwidth and systems (mobile phones/laptops/desktops/giant data centers) what do we do?

Linux and open source got people thinking and acting in a whole new way. Unfortunately there is still quite a bit of proprietary software and attitudes in the world. We must all do our part to continue breaking down those ways of thinking. Break down the barriers and help eliminate the selfishness that is everywhere in our society.

Hehe.

Subversion

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

Subversion is all setup and my data has been imported. I have checked out the data onto my laptop. I feel accomplished.

So one project complete! Now its time to setup IPV6. This ties in with my SoCal Lug project and setting up a SoCal LUG cloud. This is part of stuff I mentioned earlier in my blog about VPN and Virtual images and auto setup.

Yea hah!

Cool new site

I came across a cool website this morning. Its called Scribd. Its like youtube but for written material. Lots of good Linux texts online.

3d Effects/Beryl

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

So I have upgraded to Feisty fawn and installed Beryl. It is great when it works. Its still very buggy. Hopefully it will continue to get better and become more and more usable. I have only gotten it working in GNOME so far. Still need to figure out how to get it to work in ICEWM. I am thinking of running the GNOME environment with ICEWM as the window manager. That way I can get the best of both worlds.

More video stuff

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

So I have some done basic captures in kino. Working on editing and exports now. Once I get Kino figured out more or less (and most likely contribute to the documentation) I will move onto Lives.

Video has always been something of an interest of mine, and I will be recording various user group meetings that I attend. I will add this to my standard equipment that I travel to user group meetings with :)
